Yep, it's a chain. But living in Germantown, Panera is a nice in-between place to eat. The food varies - and this rating is more about Panera as a decent choice in Germantown than it is about the food itself. But, the food is generally decent and the location works out well for a quick stop with the family. The place does get busy at times. There are some tables outside on the sidewalk - a nice choice on a pretty day.
Trust only the panini: I fully expected to not like this chain restaurant, but at my wife's insistence we went there. We ordered their half-sandwich half-salad deal, and now I'm a convert. Their frontega chicken panini was delicious and the California mission salad was surprisingly refreshing and light. My wife had the strawberry poppyseed salad, which was also excellent, but I wasn't a fan of the French onion soup. It was too salty and had way too much cheese for my liking. The setting felt like a Starbucks, as people had laptops out to take advantage of the free wifi. Only bummer is busing your own table with non-disposable plates, which is a bummer if you're a messy eater like me. Another small minus is, for a "bread" place, their baguettes did not impress me in the least. So go with that frontega panini...you can't lose!!!
Addendum: Had to down-rate Panera one star after trying their Tuscan Chicken with Classic Cafe Salad. The Tuscan chicken offered hardly any flavor, and the "fancy" bread had very little rosemary/onion flavor to help. To me this reveals the weakness of their food when melted cheese is not involved, because the difference between this sandwich and their paninis are like night vs. day. The salad was basically mesclun greens, but drowned out in an over-sour vinaigrette, to the point of being inedible. My wife's panini and strawberry poppyseed salad was, as usual, absolutely delicious! I now only trust their panini.
