What a novel idea! Two guys from Italy (yes, real Italians running an Italian restaurant) open a nice neighborhood restaurant in Rockville/Potomac, cook really good food, and treat people like they want them to come back. That's what Roberto and Davide have done at Amici Miei. This might sound trite, but no one else is doing this in this area. That leaves Amici Miei head and shoulders above almost every other Italian restaurant in the area.
Chef Davide knows how to run a kitchen. The food here is mostly traditional yet interesting, with a minimalistic approach. Try the homemade Gnocchi with either traditional bolognese sauce (or whatever sauce he is featuring depending on the season)and you will know how good the food can be here. I've eaten here many times and never left dissatisfied.
Amici Miei is higher quality and more upscale than the low quality chain "Italian restaurants" so the portions are a little smaller and the prices a little higher. If you want a quality meal in a nice setting, it is well worth the extra money.
I have to agree with the other reviewer who said host Roberto knows how to take care of his customers. He sure does, and he also knows how to run a restaurant and find great wines to put on the wine list.
Amici Miei means "my friends", a good name choice for this restaurant, because it's not hard to make friends with these guys, and you will enjoy some really good food in the process.
Bland, Boring, Disappointing Italian food: The food here was disappointing. The pizza was doughy and had no taste. The "basil" pizza had only one leaf of basil in the middle. The eggplant parm was soggy and the pasta was mealy and also tasteless. The service was nonexistent. Even by surburbia standards, this italian food was sub-par. We will never be back.
An excellent restaurant: This restaurant is a fabulous newcomer to suburban Washington. Don't let the location in a small shopping center, near I-270, lead you into believing that it is some shabby little pizza place. It could easily be located in downtown DC, in the historic center of Rome or along Italy's Amalfi coast. The two owners have worked in some of DC's better known eateries. That means that all that goes on here is well thought out. Amici Miei is easily one of the finest values in dining in the entire area. From the pizza made in a wood-burning oven, to the gnocchi made from scratch, as well as veal, duck or other more complicated offerings, you will likely leave amazed. It does appeal to the refined palate, however. If the chain restaurant experience is more to your liking, don't come here. This is the real thing! And you will pay less than if you had gone farther into the city. Host Roberto knows how to take care of his customers.

You should probably stick to places like Dominoes, and even Mama Lucia's (if you want more upscale). Amici Miei may be too sophisticated for your taste. It's excellent!
