It's changed hands: The owner of 'Jackie's' took over and the place no longer sells those amazing steel cooked burgers of old that were bigger than the (huge) bun. Too bad. Still, the food is inexpensive and pretty good, tho the menu is quite small.
Surgically removing the pretentiousness: I read about this place and did not know what to expect. However, I always give a bar a good rating when there are stairs that lead down to a dank hole. Thankfully, this bar doesn't have a case of "Bethesda-itis." A staple of a great bar is its location. You can't see the entrance from Route 29. Once you find the entrance and go downstairs, you see that it's a small, cozy place. The menu is a little sparse, but the food is cheap. What I loved was the fact that they have $1.50 Pabst Blue Ribbon. Fabulous. The atmosphere is good, too. All walks of life come through here. The bar is tiny, but accessible. The place itself even looks like a traditional, non-offensive bar. There are no exposed paintings, no eyesores, just beer, food, the smell of fried....stuff, and of course, a relaxed attitude and environment. Oh, and don't forget the steps downstairs.
A Great Dungeon: The Quarry House has excellent service, reasonable prices, and great food. It is hidden underground along Georgia Avenue, so it is hard to find. Once you find it you will enjoy going there for lunch.
