We are real musicians masquerading as salespeople! Since 1972, the House of Musical Traditions has specialized in instruments from the U.S. and around the world. In addition to our collection of exotic, unusual, and vintage instruments, we also feature fun folk instruments for music lovers of all ages and abilities. We also have instructional and song books, and recordings of traditional music from around the country and the world. Located in the heart of Old Town Takoma Park, the folk Capital of the Nation's Capital! We're open seven days a week for your convenience.

We have expert repair people for most instruments. Repair estimates are free, except for any shipping charges incurred. Repair work will only go ahead with your approval, and we guarantee all our repairs. We also provide formal written instrument appraisals for insurance or other purposes. In addition to selling and repairing musical instruments, we also rent instruments to customers who live within a 60-mile radius of our store location in Takoma Park, MD.

If you live in the D.C. or Baltimore area you may want to take advantage of our music lessons and workshops. We offer private lessons and public workshops for many of the instruments that we sell: guitar, banjo, mandolin, lap dulcimer, hammered dulcimer, flute, harp, autoharp, fiddle, accordion, concertina, tinwhistle and more! Music lessons have lifelong value for children and adults. Learning to play an instrument helps improve fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Practicing helps children learn to focus and organize their days, improves abstract thinking ability, and enhances aural, tactile, visual and analytical memory. The skills that are improved can also translate into higher academic performance.

In summation, HMT is into bricks (& mortar) and clicks (internet accesssible) for your musical needs!
