In the early part of the last century, our general mercantile business was rather extensive, handling everything that you would expect to find in a country store: food, clothing, shoes, drugs, notions, meats, hardware, farm supplies, farm implements, gasoline, livestock feed, seed, etc. The hours were long - 7AM to 9PM Monday through Friday, and 7AM to 12 midnight on Saturday. Heat in the winter was from potbellied stoves burning coal or wood. Lighting was by carbide acetylene. In 1914 an underground gas tank was put in - the first between Bel Air and Aberdeen. Over the years our business has grown in size and has expanded to carry various lines of equipment to meet our customers' needs. In 1938 we moved to our present location, which occupies 3 acres. Established in 1899, Walter G. Coale, Inc. is Maryland's oldest full line tractor and equipment dealer.
