Terrible seafood. My Waterman Platter of fried haddock had cornmeal breading that was hard as a rock and the fish inside smelled bad. Fries were cold. I sent back my bowl of cream of crab after two bites. Worst crab soup I ever had. Crab must have just "run through the soup" in flavoring. And I don't know how they did it but the paste-like base was actually fluffy, unedible, but fluffy. My wife could not eat her sampler platter.. we threw it away. If you want decent crab soup go to the Sunset. and for regular fish, anyplace else, to include Long John Silvers would be better.. What really amazed me were the number of people in their eating.. when there are several other decent restaurants around.. Do youself a favor.. avoid like the plague.
Best Big Dive In Town: The owners must have spent nothing on ambience because the place has all the aesthetic beauty of an airplane hangar. There's plenty of secondhand smoke to be had, but hey, Gunning's is a seafood joint, not a white tablecloth, snoots in the air kind of place.
The food is great - everything from a simple fried haddock platter to crabs, and some good items for that one person in your party who just isn't into fish - everything is good. Be prepared to wait on Friday & Saturday nights.
Impromptu Dinner Choice: Last week I wanted to treat myself to dinner. I wanted a good meal, for a decent price, and I had a taste for seafood. My first choice is always Jerry's Seafood in Lanham however I didnt want to dine alone so I called a friend of mine and told him I would treat him to dinner, so he suggested Gunning's since Jerry's is usually so packed. Its a bit of a hike up the road but it was worth it. For those of you who enjoy the crab bombs from Jerry's, or the Crab Cakes from Timbuktu you will also enjoy Gunnings. I believe the meal and tip including appetizers and drinks for the two of us came out to about $95. I had SO MUCH FOOD! My entree was 4 plates in itself! The meals also come with a salad for the table. I had a lot of food to take home. If you are looking for a low key dinner spot with friendly service (the only downside was that our waitress, albeit friendly, took long periods of time in between checking on us) and fresh food then look no further than Gunnings!
