Outrageous and exorbitant pricing. We received a call yesterday from "Josh", the new person in charge of operations - brought in to "turn the HSBC" around. One of the ways he plans on revitalizing the shelter is to increase the burial fee from $300.00 to $500-1,000.00. My wife and I dropped our feline family member off 3 weeks ago. We left a deposit and were given paperwork stating the burial would be $300. Someone would call us with a date. Well we got that call yesterday and were told the bottom line is the shelter is supported by the cemetery so the new cost is $500. In addition, Josh informed my wife that the cemetery was trying to go "green" and would only bury our animal in a wooden casket, which they had not received a shipment of yet. After 30 minutes on the phone with him he conceded to allow us to bury our feline in a plastic casket - but he informed my wife that the plastic casket would cause our pet to turn to liquid. Now my wife is traumatized because all she can see is our loving cat in the casket turning to liquid!
The cemetery has had 1 burial in 6 months. Josh said the cemetery would need 2 a week to provide support. Apparently, Josh is not familiar with Maryland winters, as he came from South Carolina after "turning" that cemetery around - it took him 3 years. Soon, the ground will be hard and burials will be on hold until the spring thaw. Josh was unable to understand the concept of something is better than nothing and now is better than later. we were willing to pay the $300.00 quoted to us by the shelter staff. He was unwilling to accept our payment and offered to refund our deposit. Which I gladly accepted. Not only has the HSBC lost our business in supporting the cemetery (since we have 4 animals interred there) but also the routine donations we make of supplies, paper, blankets, medical supplies, books and any other program they have to raise money through donations.
For a not-for-profit organization their operational manager is surely looking to turn a profit AND turn away the many people who choose to support the shelter and their friendly staff/volunteers.

Never going back: After growing up adjacent to (and working on) my grandparent's farm and also owning healthy pets of my own, my wife and I were deemed unfit to adopt. The pets I owned were a hamster, gerbil, guinea pig, chicken, goose, cat and dog (not all at the same time). We tried to adopt five years ago. We currently own a 5 year old Maine Coone Cat mix, a 4 year old pure bred Maine Coone Cat and a 2 year old Bernese Mountain Dog. We adopted these pets within several months of their birth. We're also raising a 3 month old human baby who is healthy and happy.
