I had a relative who was a resident of HOA in Severna Park for over a year a little while back. I was not directly involved in their placement, but I visited HOA often enough to get a sense of the place. I am in almost 100% agreement with just about every comment made by the "Visitor" reviewer below. If you are considering this facility, please review those comments carefully and visit HOA and ask specific questions on how these items are managed. One step into the main common area says what it is - far closer to assisted dying than assisted living. For other reviewers commenting on the "lies" of the negative review - the comments are far too precise in nature to be fabricated and mirror my own observations on many fronts.
I could not agree more that the residents there deserve so much better. I should note that some of the staff are extremely caring and professional, but that is not enough to offset the other issues. I often left in tears because I was so upset about my family member having to be there. Many other relatives and friends that visited also felt the facility was severely lacking in various ways. Most of us have visited numerous nursing home and assisted living facilities, and there was general agreement that HOA in Severna Park was far substandard in comparison to other places we have been.
My father has been a resident at Household of Angels for more than 4 years and I live close by and visit often. The review dated in 2008 which levels a series of critical remarks is simple wrong and I must question the motivation of the writer. The management and staff is loving and clearing cares deeply about all residents. I have experience with a number of nursing homes and the Household of Angels is vastly superior in all respects. My father is happy, well fed, receives the personal care he needs. Based on my observations, I give Household of Angels the excellent rating they have earned.
-I've witnessed patient care that is unsafe, unethical even illegal.
-Medications given without proper charting, assessments, reasessments. Dementia patients left unsupervised to take medications. Medicine dropped on floor and readministered. No attempt to account for meds not taken.
-Residents restrainted to their wheelchairs day after day without doctors orders because it was inconvenient to the staff to have them walking.
-Very very little in the form of activities. residents sitting for hours on their chairs.
-At times inappropriate music or tv like MTV or Hip Hop.
-Lack of basic hygiene for staff. no way to wash hands after bathroom care.
-Insensitivity on part of staff and managment to individual and cultural needs. Witnessed ridicule and mockery towards residents. Talking badly about them wihtin ear shot.
-Very short staffed so staff is over worked not enought time to talk gently with residents. They are often rushed and pushed and shown inpatience.
-Not following safety standards in terms of keeping food fresh.
-Unsafe, unhygenic wound care.
-Not safe patient handling. Witness falls that were not properly reported on incident reports.
-Most are dementia patients, many with advanced dementia. Most are wheelchair-bound, some are practically immobile. And yet Houshold of Angles is staffed to assisted living staff quota's which is lower than for nursing homes. So there is not enough staff for the needs of residents who need so much more assistance.
-Residents are a lovely group who deserve so much better.

RE; This review. What a discraceful collection of outright lies! HOA is not at all as described in this slanderous report. My mother was a resident there for several of her last months of life, and was always treated with love and compassion, as were all the other residents. I NEVER saw a resident mistreated in any way. I also NEVER witnessed any of the complaints this "reviewer" alleges. I must assume he or she is a disgruntled person with some sort of petty gripe against the administrators of HOA. Household Of Angels is managed in an exemplery way by very dedicated and hard working personnel. This includes the owners, who, rather than remain isolated in their offices, are daily actively involved in the care of the residents, including feeding, assisting in transporting and toileting. It is shameful for such an excellent and difficult to find facility to be blasted with statements which are untrue, inaccurate, and simply mean. HOA will continue to have my highest recommendations!
