| About: | This fabulous uptown cinema was built in 1939, when theaters only had one very large screen. Watching a first-run film on the Senator's huge screen is something every movie fan should experience. Indeed, USA Today named it one of the top four theaters in the country. Along with the Charles Theater, the Senator is the heart of Maryland's vibrant cinema scene, and regularly hosts the debuts of films by directors John Waters and Barry Levinson, both Baltimore natives. |

Love it love it! I've had a great experience every time, even when the movie wasn't so hot (Spider Man 3...ugh). Love the theater itself, but now they even have a mini tiki bar which is a pleasant addition for after work movies! I'm excited about the future of the venue, and hoping it stays around not only in its current state but improves as we go along with multiple types of entertainment. It's fun to see all the sidewalk creations when there's a new premier. Take the time to look next time you're there!
Theater is fun and the two restaurants around the corner, Cafe Zen, California Chinese or Zen West, Tex Mex with all freshly made dishes and terrific ribs, make the trip worthwhile.
A recent review dubbed this cool Balto. landmark as "World Class". While it surely isn't that, it is a quality place to take in a movie, and absolutely beats the local mega-plex.
Chairs are still uncomfortable (they're not "stadium" per the previous review, they're uncomfortable old ones with poor back support), though, the sound system lacks, and the neighborhood doesn't give one many reasons to come early or stay late. The Thai restaurant across the street is OK, though.
For something more approximating "World Class" in a retro theater, try the outstanding Uptown Theater, Washington, D.C., which is far superior in most every respect to the Senator, and has varied and quality pre/post movie options in fun Cleveland/Woodley Park. It is right on Metro's red line.
