My wife and I found this place about 2 years ago. Paul the owner is wonderful. He makes a mean scorpion but be careful, they have bitten me once or twice. The hospitality in this place is amazing. If you eat in the bar you can always count on a free tropical shot on the house and an "adult" fortune cookie to give you the giggles. The ramaki is fabulous, the Tso's chicken and Moo Shi Pork is the best and anything we have ever ordered has been great. There are always regulars there, which says alot.Paul always has the bar dressed up for the current season, and is happy to take everyone's pictures to add to the wall. For a great atmosphere and fabulous food...go to Paul's.
I've been going to the Hunan Village for 20 years now and though like we all do it shows it's age a little bit the food is every bit as good as it ever was.Even if I go a year between visits the mangement remembers me .They have turned one dining room into a Karaoke Bar,and they make a good Mai Tai,but I usually sit in the dining room or get a carry out.
The bill of fare is standard "Mid-Atlantic Hunan-Szechuan with some Cantonese",which is the most accesible Chinese food to me.My favorite dish,Kung Pao Chicken,is presented as it should be,with white meat chicken, peanuts, water chestnut, chilis and spicy brown sauce.Thank God they dont put bell pepper, mushrooms and little ears of corn in it like many local places.Thats just a cheap way of using less chicken. Also good is Orange Beef and Sweet and Sour Chicken.
The appetizers are excellent,I like Beef Teriyaki (served with the Sterno Burner so you can grill to your pleasure) but my favorite is the classic Roast Pork, red around the edges,a little sweet, and if you ask they will give you some "red oil" which is hot peppers soaked in oil which gives a nice tingle.Dont forget to get some "house mustard" which really livens up any of the appetizer meats.
Its a pleasure to write about one of my favorite places. They have changed little in 20 years, which suits me fine.Too many places feel they have to fix what aint broke, which in most cases leads to disappointment.I have seen too many places go under because they felt they had to change just for the sake of change.
Good Eats in Brooklyn: This place has always been great food for a good price. If you go in for a sit down meal the wait staffis wonderfull. They do their best with special requests or changes you may wanna make (ex. beef & broccoli no broccoli). It is clean and always welcoming. If you do take out/delivery OMG they read it back to you give you a total and the time they tell you is not far off at all. If you are ever in Brooklyn and want a good Chinese (sp) restaurant this is IT. Later

Commenting on my own review:I ate here again a month ago and was surprised to find a large amount of tofu in the Kung Pao chicken which had never been an ingredient before.I have no problem with tofu but do not see it as a valid ingredient in this dish.It affects the texture, the taste, and even the smell of the classic Kung Pao,and not in a positive way.I hope this was a temporary aberration, maybe a fill-in chef.I will order again and report back.
