The Best: The best cold or hot sandwich in town. Period.
Best Hoagies Outside South Philly: When I lived in Las Vegas I was in heaven. Why? Not because of all the gambling and entertainment; not because of all the hiking and rock climbing and other outdoor activity; not because the Grand Canyon, LA and San Diego were only six hours away. No. I was in heaven because my two most favorite eaterys from Delaware and Texas had set up shop there, so in addition to the Ceasar's Palace buffet (by far the best in Vegas) I could enjoy the hoagies of my childhood at Capriotti's and the Nachos and breakfast tacos from my years in Texas at Taco Cabana.
Having lived in Texas for 10 years I came to appreciate the nuances of a good Hoagie -- trust me, they don't exist in Texas. Cappriotti's has the sub and sandwhich industry in a stranglehold and no one can touch the exquisiteness of their fare. What's more, they have an extended menu for vegetarians and I must say, the veggie turkey sub is one of my all-time favorites. If I could have one thing different -- I'd ask them to bring back the veggie bologna.
All that aside, what sets Capriotti's apart from other delicatessens is the quality of their rolls. I don't know if they bake them on the premises or purchase them from a vendor, but the roll is the key ingredient -- well, of course the quality of the meats and cheeses is important too. If you live in or near Delaware and haven't tried a Capriotti's Hoagie yet -- what are you waiting for? Get to it ASAP!
