A find...: We found this treasure by accident. After reading mixed reviews, we were hesitant, but decided it was worth a shot. Francois our host was one of the highlights along with the fabulous red snapper, rack of lamb, and apple tart. The only real hiccup was the fois appetizer which was not perfect, nor well balanced, even with the fabulous pomegranate sauce. The atmosphere is one of the best we have experienced in terms of quaint unpretentious French bistros. Food is simple and well executed, menu is reserved and pleasant, and wine list is short and to the point.
Please visit for an extremely lovely evening.
There's a better place a few feet down the street: Le Tire Bouchon was the THE place in Fairfax for traditional French fare until the business changed hands last year. Luckily, the old magic of Le Tire Bouchon is alive an well at another place just a few feet away. It's called La Rue 123 and it's located in the Bailiwick Inn. There you will find a very competent and knowledgeable staff, an impressive wine list, and a traditional French menu with items such as escargot, pate', rack of lamb, duck, and the like. Not to be missed!
dissapointing: went there attracted by the good reviews on Zagat. The food was at best mediocre.
French onion soup lacked a good onion/consome taste and was overwhelmed by cheese. Escargots were tasteless, lacking the garlicky herbed flavour in the butter. Foie gras felt as if it was out of a can (for $25!!!) and the carpacio was stringy.
The service was good and the decor was pleasant ... but not enough to compensate for the ho hum food, especially at over $200 for two people (including one cocktail each and a bottle of wine)
