In comparison to other Dominican salons in DC and Silver Spring, MD; this is the best one by far. It is larger and nicer than the other salons, the man at the front desk and the other staff are very kind, and the head stylist is very knowlegeable. Also their rates do not fluctuate too much, so I always know what to expect. The reason I started going to Special Touch was because a the other dominican salons they talked about their clients in Spanish. I have not encountered that in this salon.
I did the Keratin treatment at this salon and it came out very nice. Wash and sets always last a full week without needing to use hot appliances.

I have been going to Special Touch for over a year and I love it. I have been natural for 3.5 years and when I walk out you can not tell that I do not have a perm. I have tried a few stylist in the shop and have been satisfied everytime. I have had my hair cut, highlights, and color and everyone likes it. I won't go anywhere else and most of the time I go it is as a walk-in and I never feel that they rush my hair and I never had to go somewhere else to get it done again.

This is a really long review, but I want everyone to know exactly why I hate this place so much. This is a variation on a complaint letter that I sent to the place, which they have not responded to.

One Saturday, I came as a walk-in, and I had my hair curly and natural. I asked the man at reception if you had time to do my hair that afternoon. He said okay, and he took me back and I sat down.

Now, I haven't permed my hair in over 4 months at this point, so my hair was still very curly and quite dry from all of the summer heat and not enough moisturizer. I fully expected a hair cut, and was hoping for a new style. My mother also said , "They use gentle relaxers for sensitive scalps here- they don't burn!"

I asked one lady (the manager, I think) if I could get my hair cut like a blond hairdresser that worked there. She replied, "No, her hair is good, and if you do that, it will look like an afro!" I said that the flat irons would take care of that. She replied, "I would need a full stove to do the same for you."

My hair is very soft and fine, and high heat products have destroyed before- which is why I had to go natural for months before coming to the hair salon. Having someone's hair being called good, and then have my own hair being inferred as bad for making an afro, was an insult.

Next, I got my perm service. Before starting, the lady asked if I had a sensitive scalp. I said yes. Then I noticed, after the back was applied, that the perm she was a Mizani Super Strength, and not the mild formula that I was expecting. The hairdresser kept saying in Spanish- "I don't have enough time!"- when the other hair dressers asked her why she was using it. I still had faith in the shop, though- until my scalp started to burn. Very badly. The hairdresser washed it out, and she told me that my hair was only "medium straight."

While deep conditioning, I reached down into the drain, to see how much hair I lost, and came up with a clump of hair, some blond, some black. The drain was dirty with other people's hair.

I got a blow dry, and my hair was flat ironed, and finished, and I looked in the mirror to see the results. They were not what I expected.

First, the left front side of my hair was not completely permed, as the top part of my head. Since the stylist didn't cut my hair the proper length, my hair in the back was long and thin, while the top was cut very short.

I complained to the manager, but she argued that she had to squeeze me in on a Saturday and that my hair looked good.

The following day, my hair was no longer straight. I saw that the top and the left side of my head were not completely permed. My ends were much straighter than the roots of my hair. Also, the scalp still hurt from the Mizani Super relaxer. My short top hair, combined with the puffiness of the hair, looked worse than before I got my hair done.
I had to go to another Dominican shop, in Philadelphia, to correct the bad cut that Special Touch has given me.

The hairdresser in Philly also confirmed for me that my hair was processed unevenly, and that it needed to be re-permed.

Special Touch accepted a walk-in, and then gave sub-par service at an inflated price. Also, they did not cut my hair the way that it needed.

I strongly believe that I should have not paid for the shop's services. For $80.00, in a terrible economy, hair shops need to be more sensitive to the client's needs.
