Simply the best Chinese food anywhere in any city. The Peking Duck restaurant on Route 1 in Hybla Valley is the standard by which I judge all other Chinese restaurants wherever my travels take me.

In the Fall of 1981, I was fortunate to find this restaurant on its opening day. As a regular for 26 years I have been spoiled ever since, as nothing else lives up to Peking Duck (both the specific menu item and the restaurant as a whole).

You simply must try the signature dish. The owner and chef, "Duck" Chang Jr., greets you and carves the duck expertly right beside your table. The staff will show you how to prepare the pancake-wrapped delicacy. Even if you've never had Peking Duck before, I guarantee you will love this dish. I've brought many friends and relatives here over the years, and everyone loves it. No offense to my wife's home cooking, but our out-of-town guests usually ask if we can go to that wonderful Peking Duck restaurant.

There are many other wonderful dishes available on the menu. The dumplings (steamed or fried) are the best anywhere. You also won't find a better soup than their chicken & corn chowder. Sure, they have all the typical Chinese restaurant dishes, but the extensive menu includes some more exotic varieties as well. If you like seafood even a little bit, you'll love the way this restaurant serves it. Ask if there's an off-menu special available, such as when they get some fresh fish flown in from China.

If possible, save some room for dessert. The toffee bananas or strawberries are wonderful. I''m told the chef is descended from a long line of dessert chefs to the emperor of China. His father invented the modern method of preparing Peking Duck so you don't have to order it days in advance. If you ever dined at the award-winning "Duck Chang's" restaurant in Annandale, expect a similarly wonderful meal at Peking Duck but in a more relaxed atmosphere.

This one's a no-brainer. You absolutely can't go wrong at the Peking Duck restaurant.

The BEST steamed dumplings!: I love Asian food but I confess that Chinese is my least favorite; however Peking Duck is better than most, and its steamed dumplings are extraordinary for three reasons: The dough is light and perfect (most Chinese restaurants serve dumplings that are thick and doughy), the filling consists of a nicely seasoned meat, and the dipping sauce is made from a beautifully-seasoned soy sauce -- with fresh minced garlic and slivers of scallions. There is also a cold appetizer that I order as an entree, the name of which I unfortunately cannot recall but it's a delight, especially in the summer. Its base is tender strips of beef, with cucumber, onions and cilantro in a light, perhaps vinegar-based, sauce. It tends to be Tabasco-hot, so I modify that when I order. Oh yes...the Peking Duck is good too.

Best chinese anywhere: When we lived nearby, we went often, because it was our local chinese place. Since we've moved, we've tried half a dozen local places, and nothing compares. We make the drive just for the Peking Duck - the owner's secret plum sauce recipe is to die for. Pick up some extra when you leave for barbequing, or experimenting with your own recipes!
