| About: | In the Columbia Pike region of Arlington, Matuba offers a traditional and reliable Japanese menu. The intimate dining area is casual with traditional touches. Japanese prints adorn the walls and blond wood furnishings add an air of authenticity. This is among the most reliable Japanese restaurants in the Washington area. Sushi, tempura and grilled delicacies are among the mainstays. Some of the house specialties are the rainbow roll, with a variety of fish wrapped together, and a shrimp and scallops entree. An additional restaurant is located in Bethesda. |

It's amazing what comes out of a tiny restaurant next to a cinema-and-draft house. I first tried the Matuba in 1978 and have been going back since. Where else can you find an authentic Japanese veal cutlet?
The restaurant is tastefully decorated (I always liked entering from the rear, through a curtain), the service wonderful, the price is reasonable. There's even parking (limited) in back.
You can imagine my joy when I lived a couple blocks away for about five years.
Excellent!: My fiancee and I ate at Matuba on March 10, 2006. It had delicious, authentic Japanese food at a reasonable price. We ordered sushi and sashimi which turned out to be excellent. The portions were large, unlike at many other Japanese restaurants. Our waitress was very kind and friendly. When we recognized that she was Thai, we practiced our Thai with her and she chatted with us for several minutes. We had a sorbet dessert, which was also delicious. We'll definitely be coming back to Matuba again.
Great experience: The first time I visited Matuba, I could not believe that it had such excellent flavor, service and tradition in such a small place. If you are looking for a sushi business lunch or evening date, without paying high prices, Matuba is your place.
