Al's ... I feel I ought to genuflect every time I order. The cheesesteaks are wonderful, and huge. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, although you may wish to call your order in before appearing because seemingly everyone wants a sub.
There's nothing prepossessing about the place: it's an institution so it needn't put on airs. But it's still easy to drive right on by if you don't know what you're looking for (1940's brick facade).
The seafood isn't bad either. And I do love the big jar of cherry peppers on the counter; help yourself for free.
Long live Al's, one of that vanishing group of family-owned sandwich shops.
Top's Outside Philly: I grew up working in a deli in New York and went to college near Philadelphia, where I worked in a few steak shops. So I'm not snooty about much, but I am about sandwiches and cheesesteaks. This place has arguably the best cheesesteaks outside of Philly. Very moist, very tasty, very filling. The roll isn't quite Amaroso's but it is very good. They don't cheat you on steak at all. Not crazy about the chicken steaks or the fries. Go with jalapeño poppers instead.
Note:If you are a whiz devotee, you are out of luck. Al says go back North if you want whiz! They do melt the cheese though, so this is not a huge deal.
Best in Alexandria!: Great food, people, and service! What's not to like!!
