A good cafe if you like to hang out...but not if you actually like coffee. It's mediocre at best.
In walking to work during the week, I'd pass St. Elmo's and curse the people loughing at tables with excellent coffee and pastry, going through newspapers or their laptops. On weekends I used to go by St. Elmo's and curse the families with their kids, dogs, and other impedimenta that made the place unapproachable.
But with the proper timing -- like evenings -- it's possible to grab a poetry reading, live music, a scratch chess (or go) game and go through some pretty good chai tea.
Great place to hang out with your laptop or a friend. Has live music most evenings (the Thursday night guys are FANTASTIC) so check the schedule on their website first if you are looking for quiet. Great coffee, made by people who know what they are doing (unlike, ahem, other places). Fabulous baked goods. They do have sandwiches, but there are better lunch places nearby. Nonetheless, it's a Del Ray institution. On sunny days, the sidewalk patio is a perfect place to sit and watch the people (and a parade of dogs) go by.
