Last night, my husband and I dined at the Main Street Mill restaurant. Anytime we decide to dine out, that’s where we go. No matter how many times we eat there, and whether it is for lunch or diner, the menu leaves us torn between numerous tempting options. We have several favorites from the menu. When we have lunch there, my husband’s favorites are the pulled pork BBQ sandwich topped with coleslaw and a side of buffalo chips with bleu cheese dressing for a dipping sauce, and the grilled chicken sub with a side of fries is always good, too. I always find myself choosing from the crab cake sandwich, tex-mex chicken sandwich, chicken ranchero salad, taco salad, and Alice’s chicken salad sandwich, should I stop there? The list is long, but they are all truly delicious. The crab cake sandwich is clearly made with real lump crab meat and has very little filler, the tex-mex pays tribute to all of the spicy food lovers out there, and you’ll never be sorry you ordered the chicken ranchero; try it with the honey mustard dressing which they make themselves! The taco salad is served in a large, bowl shaped, taco shell, and filled to the brim with lettuce, chili, cheese, salsa, and sour cream, and the Alice’s chicken salad sandwich comes on a huge Kaiser roll with big chunks of white meat chicken and is topped with lettuce, tomato and bacon, Mmm!
When we went to “The Mill” last night, I already had my heart set on a wonderful evening with my husband and could not wait to get inside; just walking up the wide steps leading to the front door made me feel relaxed. It was a lovely, warm evening, so we asked the hostess to seat us on the deck for an alfresco dinner. The first thing my husband and I do when we have dinner there is choose our appetizer and drink. You can eat there countless times without ever having to have the same combination of beer, wine, and appetizer, and as “regulars” we appreciate the variety! For dinner, my husband was asking if I thought he should get the BBQ ribs or the pasta perfection, but I was too busy choosing between the Caribbean chicken and the Tilapia to give him a response. When the waitress set our drinks down, she asked if we’d seen the dinner specials listed on the board. We hadn’t seen them, so she read them off; a seafood combo, consisting of flounder, shrimp, scallops, and a crab cake, served with French fries and coleslaw, and you were able to choose whether you wanted it fried or broiled. The second special was Filet Marcello, with a baked potato, and side salad. My husband and I looked at each other with Cheshire grins, and knew we each wanted to get one of the specials. My husband ordered the Filet Marcello, cooked medium, and I ordered the seafood combo, broiled. My husband’s bacon wrapped filet mignon was cooked to perfection, and practically melted in my mouth, when I tried a bite. My seafood combo was so generous in portion that I had to rely on my husband to help me finish, and it too was mouth-watering! I wish we had saved room for the Kentucky Derby pie; instead we opted for a cup of coffee and sat soaking up the view of Main Street in the moonlight.
After having had so many consecutive experiences that exceeded expectations at The Main Street Mill, I knew I wanted to write a review in hopes of paying them back in some way. Thank you for a welcoming atmosphere, friendly service, and excellent food!

Certainly a safer choice within town, but as with most restaurants in this town Flavor and service are options. Still if you need to eat this is abetter place within town.

Salads and steak are substandard, i.e., you'll do better cooking your own. Crab cakes are o.k. Service is inconsistent. The place has nice atmosphere because it's in an older building, but the food isn't worth it. I suspect they make most their money from the bar upstairs...

It has to be said that substandard is decidedly the poorest choice of words imaginable for hand-cut, USDA approved steaks, as stated on their menu. While the lofty spaces, towering chestnut beams, and weathered pine floors add to the overall impression of the restaurant it is unfair to fully credit the atmosphere to the fact that the restaurant is inside of an “older building”. The atmosphere is also seen in the murals that were painted by local artist Patricia Windrow, it’s in the acoustics of the chattering customers, the feel of the white linen napkins, it’s bumping in to a neighbor only to turn around and give a family from Massachusetts directions to the Skyline Drive; to me, “The Mill” is like an old friend, and you can’t match atmosphere like that. Lastly, while the tavern located on the second floor is not to be overlooked of its own local familiarity and atmospheric comfort, it hardly seems to be the financial source of the entire restaurant given that it keeps the same hours as the non-smoking portion of the restaurant.
