I love Emilio's. There food is good, affordable and they often have live music playing. The paella was very good. Every time I have gone, the service has been efficient and friendly.
They just didn't pull it off.: I love the whole tapas concept in which you get to try several dishes of food rather than put all of your eggs in one basket in ordering a single entree. The biggest problem here was that I was seated in the non smoking section adjacent to the bar. There were a half dozen smokers sitting at the bar and their smoke was too much to enjoy the meal.
As for the food, they were out of boquerones - one of the main tapas served in Spain that is available in every tapas bar. The best dish I had was ceviche which was marinated perfectly - not overly soaked till the fish breaks down which is common in restauarants. Tortilla, wedges of spinach and potato pie, were tasty, but I have had many better versions of the same dish at other restaurants and have made much better potato tortilla at home (I have not attempted the spinach). Chorizo that was served flambeed was the second favorite dish and provided a great tasty traditional tapa. The shrimp sauteed in garlic and oil was seasoned well and tasty, but the shrimp were overcooked and rubbery. Because of how the shrimp were cooked, this was my least favorite dish. The server was friendly and I feigned fullness to explain why I didn't eat everything. Still, there is great potential here for them to pull the restaurant together. I might consider trying this restaurant again if I return to Richmond, but I would not go out of my way to eat there.
