So glad this is my local coffee spot!: I'm really not a coffee drinker. But their frozen coffee is just heavenly!!! It tastes like you're drinking strait from the gallon of Giradelli chocoloate you can see sitting on the shelves behind the counter.
The food: talk about delish!!! Wow! Such care and love is put into preparing your freshly made panini. It is certainly worth the sometimes 10 minute wait to press the sandwich and get it presented to you. The cole slaw is soooo tasty, with hints of celery seed; the 3 bean salad is also an excellent zesty option, available as one of 3 choices for the sides with the panini. My favorite: the mozzarella, tomato and basil. The veggie one is cheesy, savory, and full of flavor, with a large variety of roasted vegetables; although it was pretty greasy. I'm looking forward to trying the soups, and other panini selections, as more vegetarian ones become available.
I was bummed out about the bagel I had there. It just wasn't fresh. Why can't we have a good bread bakery around here? Or, is it possible to freshly bake your own there? Toasting just didn't cut it. Oh--and ya gotta have Philly cream cheese w/ it too. That generic brand just doesn't cut it.
The waitstaff is full of smiles, and cute faces. Walk around the eclectic boutique shop connected next door, for unique gifts, lovely clothing, and funny magnets and such while you wait.
Seating is limited, so it's nice to eat quickly, and move on, letting someone else have your spot.
I enjoy looking around the shop as I eat, tempted by bottles and jars of locally harvested honey, and noting how tidy and clean the place really is.
You've got your heart in your business, and it shows through magically.
Oh, and a question: the "tip" mug in the front by the register--how much is expected in such a place? The normal 15-20%? I've always wondered.
Best in the region: San Francisco quality food, small town feel.Great sandwiches, coffee and bread pudding--the best I have ever had.
relaxing and funky: You can relax with an excellent cup of coffee: try the Fairfax Dark. Booths are comfy, and there are magazines to leaf through. There is always something fun playing on the CD machine. Now they have light fare too, the paninis are out of this world! If you're feeling really decadent try the cinnamon buns - truly sinful. Service is a bit slow but very warm. You need to bus your own table, you spoiled child. Be sure to visit the Simple Gifts store which adjoins the shop.

I actually have to go back and give this coffeehouse a 2 star. I was completely turned off by the attitude of the owner during my last visit. It seemed it was too difficult for her to tell me about the daily specials, which I didn't notice was on a sign on the counter. The owner barked at me to look at the special menu on the counter after I'd asked her what the specials were. I decided I would NEVER give this business any more of my money due to this simple lack of kindness. I really thought it would have been much easier if she had simply told me what they were. Was it really that hard?? At my visit before that, the insides of the panini were not hot. It scares me, because that is a good way to get food poisoning--not eating foods heated properly. I will continue to warn people about the sour attitude that I experienced at Fairfax Coffee House. I guess the first red flag went up when she didn't smile during my previous visits. Your customers are keeping your coffeehouse in business, so give them a smile and a positive, helpful attitude, cuz ya just lost a good one.
