Most Burlington/Alamance county natives love ZACKs. It was and still is the premiere place to get a hot dog or hamburger that is not generic. I know why "sophisticated palate" didn't like ZACKs - his or her name is all the evidence you need to understand. Bless his or her heart.

HNG: I remember the previous location for ZACKs too - the other end of the block - at the corner of Worth and Front. I remember the "line 'em up his arm" guy too. That just gave it better flavor.

Just around the corner was Boston Sandwich shop - they were Greek immigrants, too, I think. But going in there back then was like what John Belushi, Bill Murray, and the Saturday Night Live gang showed us in the "hamburger hamburger chips - no coke, pepsi" bit. I think only one of them in Boston Sandwich shop spoke English.

But ZACKs was, is, and always will be the best!

A group of us went to Zack's, I must say, I've had better hotdogs at Mayberry or Cookout. I'm glad I didn't have to pay much for them. Also let me add that there was a lady getting a call in order, she was 20 cents short and they would not let her get it, how awful..... I would've given it to her had I known that but thats bad business. I will never go back to that place. I make better hotdogs at home and I would not suggest that place to my dog! lol

I remember my visits to Zack's in the 50's and 60's when it was across the street from the old Fire Dept. It had a deer head on the wall above the door and the tapestry on the back wall that looked like a huge dollar bill under glass. Those days the short red-haired guy we called "Red" lined up the hot dogs on his arm and applied all the condiments. We never asked "how much arm hair is in my hot dogs?" Weekend nights after going to the East 70 Drive In theater we'd "haul it" down to Zacks for some delicious hot dogs and a Pepsi in the bottle. I worked at Burger Chef (similar to McDonalds)and after having flipped burgers all day or night we'd go to Zack's for some dogs and sit there and talk until 2AM in the morning. Ahhh! Those were the days my friend!! I joined the Air Force after college and no matter where I was in the world for 20+ years I'd always go back to Zack's when I came to Burlington. I still hope to see some of my old friends when I go back some time.
