I've eaten here in the past but hadn't been here for awhile until dining here this past week. I was disappointed. The staff was utterly useless - all that I had contact with. We were not greeted when we came in, when someone finally looked at us, they didn't say a word. We asked whether we should seat ourselves or wait to be seated. At long last, someone showed up to seat us - there was enough staff & not so many patrons that no one should have had to wait at all. The portions were more than adequate for sandwich plates that two of us ordered, but the "entree" meals were skimpy. I kid you not the two crab cakes I received were about 1" in diameter - they were thick, so maybe each equaled a small crabcake, but why would a restaurant want to make a meal look tiny? Also, they weren't very good -very salty. They were served with grits & cooked ?collard? greens. Greens were ok, I guess, if you are southern & raised on them like me, grits were something that seemed more like a thick, salty, cheesy flavored white sauce with mushy grits in it - not normal grits texture. And even though I'm southern to the core, I would probably have chosen something different to eat with crabcakes, greens & grits not being my favorite "eating out" choices, but it came that way. I am a woman, not so large, & also had cake for dessert - also which was quite pretty & tasty - but I went home & ate a sandwich. That's just not right. It was just not as good as it used to be. Also, although there was a good selection of desserts, there was a bland sameness about the appearance of them. Has the management changed or something? Our waiter seemed totally clueless & very nervous. None of the staff seemed to have much in the way of social skills that can go a long way in making a restaurant popular. I have had better service & better food in the past. I really miss the old look of the place when you could watch the cakes being made in the back - it was better then.
I went downtown to lunch and had eggplant parm! It was mediocre at best. I was willing to give the restaurant another try.
My husband and I went to ganache to order some dessert, particularly the beautiful cakes we have seen online. I love cakes and bake them frequently (obviously not enough for a career), but I am always critical when cakes are not moist or the flavors supposedly infused in the layers are not apparent after tasting the cake. I ordered the Bailey's Dream Cake and was very dissapointed. The part of the cake that was actually CAKE was very slim, and if you tasted the layer alone the yellow cake was dry and did not taste like amaretto, as it had been advertised. My biggest pet peeve was this delicious sounding baileys butter cream frosting, which was no more than a fluffy whip cream-based icing. I felt as if I had went to publix and ordered a cake. Buttercream, simply stated, need not be compromised and blended or cut with a whipping cream, it takes away from the cake. I was hoping for a moist flavorful cake with a rich creamy bailey-flavored FROSTING, instead I ended up getting a glorified birthday cake.
