I had just moved into Greensboro after 8 years in the Navy. I was looking for a decent place to eat and stumbled across Liberty Oak. I was blown away from first bite! Having grown up in San Francisco and traveled the world dining from France all the way to the Middle East, I cannot recall a better bang for the buck restaurant. The portions are perfect for southern eating, just enough to get to the calorie count, but the taste tips the scales. I have rarely looked over at my wife and held a look of shock while taking the first bite of a meal. 20 dollar a plate meal at 40 dollar a plate quality.
Located in a subterranian portion of the downtown Greensboro scene it would be easy to dismiss and walk past. The service was more than adequate, fast service during a bustling evening. Wine that complimented our meal. And an atmosphere that is surprisingly non-pretentious considering the quality of food.
I suggest that anyone who thinks they know of the best place in the Triad to eat but that has not dined at Liberty Oak hold off on their assumptions until they try this hidden gem.
Good food and service: They have excellent crab cakes. The service is typically friendly, but sometimes takes a while. Probably because they are always so busy. Not a good place if you want to have a lot of conversation. It gets loud and is hard to hear others in your group.
Best sandwiches in town: Best sandwiches in town. I recommend the turkey and havarti or roast beef and brie. Great patio, but did not get 5 stars only because their patio faces a parking garage and is not that scenic
