A Realistic Pub Experience: The James Joyce Irish Pub is definitely Tyler's Tap Room's "ugly step-sister" but it's still one of our favorite places to hang out. It is very much like a pub you'd find over in the UK, downright realistic when it comes to all of the smoke inside. This is why we prefer to sit outside on one of the (very low) benches, drink our pints of good Irish beer (yes, some things out of Ireland are good) and people watch. The James Joyce also has Strong Bow, one of my favorite cider beers that I didn't think I'd ever find in the States (although this is NOT an Irish brew). The food is more than decent; great burgers, appetizers and authenticities such as fish and chips, all fairly reasonably priced. Another reviewer of this pub indicated that this isn't the best part of town; well, there can be some bums roaming around, but, they usually crawl back to their dorm rooms on nearby Duke's campus without a hassle. Just kidding. Seriously, the neighborhood isn't that bad. Poor downtown Durham just gets a bad rap.
Definitely give the Joyce a try sometime. But, be prepared to wait for the bill, they are not always very speedy (but they are all pretty friendly).
A Fairly Decent Chain Restaurant: This particular location is a little bit rougher than it's upscale cousin in Baltimore, but the food was very good. The waitress was a little overworked but we were served in a timely fashion. Just took forever to get our check. My partner had the smoked salmon appetizer as a main course and it was excellent. I had a corned-beef sandwich on rye along with a Harp. The beer cost almost as much as the sandwich, so this place isn't inexpensive. The place itself was a little cramped and I was avoiding a shelf dividing the upper wall from the wainscoting. Both the upscale Baltimore version and this place had high noise levels, which means that it's not great for conversation with someone you've just met. Go there for a good time with some old friends. For a first date, I'd recommend either the Hibernian or Tir na Nog
Awsome Pub style restaraunt: If you like a nice stout beer and good people this is your pub!
