My boyfriend and I went to Chef's 505 for our Valentine's dinner. We went on a whim without a reservation, and although the restaurant was full they made us feel very welcome and made arrangements so that it was possible for us to be seated within 10 minutes. The service was absolutely amazing throughout the entire evening. The drinks were superb and the food was out of this world delicious. I got the crab cakes with truffle mashed potatoes and my boyfriend got the lamb shank with vegetables.. they were both wonderful and perfectly proportioned. It was pricey.. the most expensive meal we have had in Greenville so far, but it was totally worth it. We had a great experience! I would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing and romantic experience!
If fine dining in Greenville interests you, you will eventually check out Chef's 505. In most ways C505 rewards your patronage, but you will also find areas that need improvement! After just eating there, I have some very positive and some critical things to say!
Overall, the atmosphere at C505 is very relaxed. They offer much better than average food in an environment that is not toffey-nosed! On the other hand, the restaurant should be cleaner, needs fresh paint and should not have a mop on top of a coat rack near the bathrooms. Silverware needs to be spotless in a restaurant of this caliber, too.
As for the food, the salads will leave you "ho hum" (they are not crip), the meat and vegetables are very very good (I just had the second best steak I have ever eaten outside my home there), desserts are usually excellent (watch out for things that are not homemade - pecan pie - ask before ordering).
The price of C505 can be a bit expensive for Greenville (the cheapest I have ever gotten out of there is $88), BUT 5 of the 6 times I have been there, it has been TOTALLY worth it!
The wait staff there is always pleasant, effecient, polite and give you service without being overly unctuous or too casual. The service doesn't sparkle, but its better than most of Greenville's other restaurants!
As for past trips, I would say I have had some HEAVENLY meals there - on par with some of the food I have eaten in France (culinary heaven, if you didn't know that), but have always found the decor drab and the level of cleanliness lacking!
In summary, go to C505's and know what to expect and you will not be disappointed! Depending on how you see the restautant, you will either be very impressed with some great food and over look a few flaws OR find your experience disappointing because the lack of execution on simple, small things spoil what could be Greenville's best restaurant!
My Friend and I decided to try out Chefs 505 in Greenville NC. What a Mistake that was. We knew that is an upscale Restaurant and we were willing to pay the Price. We decided to sit outside because it was a beautiful day and I wanted to smoke. The Waiter came out 10 minutes later to bring us the Menu. I asked three times to bring me an Ashtray and he finally brought a dirty one. Then he brought the Silverware and we had to take our Napkins to clean it. The Appetizer was great, it was hot and plenty for two People to share. The Salad was bland and very small. Our Main course was the biggest Joke, I had the Filet Mignon and I substituted the Sweet Potato Hash for Potato Wedges. I was really hungry since I had not eaten all day long. When the Waiter put my Plate in front of me, I was shocked. You could barely see the piece of Meat because it was so small. I had three Stalks of Asparagus that was undercooked and bitter due to the fact that they put it on the Grill after the cooked the Meat. Had black burned specks on them. I counted the Potato Wedges and I had exactly 13 small ones. The Food was just luke warm. I waited for the Waiter to come out and check if we like it. It took him 15 minutes to do so. I made him aware of it and he had the Nerve to ask if I want him to heat it up. Where? In the darn Microwave? No!!!!!! My Friend had the Rib eye and it was mostly fat. Her Garlic mashed Potatoes were so dry that she could barely swallow them and her Vegetables were undercooked as well. (Those were the frozen kind) We were there for almost 2 hrs. And we were the only ones there. We left at 7:30pm and not another Sole showed up. I also complained about the Dirty Ashtray and the Bartender blamed it on the Commercial Dishwasher!!!! They are washing Plates,
Silverware and Ashtrays at the same time in the Dishwasher!!! That is gross!!!!!! But the Bartender assured me that the Water was 400 degrees. That does not matter how hot the Water is. You just don't wash Dishes and Ashtrays together. They did take $30.00 off our Bill after I spoke to the Owner and the Waiter said to us; Feel free to never come here again!!!!! My Point is, if I go to an upscale Restaurant I expect the Service to be superb, the Dishes clean and the food to be plentiful and hot! If you are planning on going to this Restaurant, be sure to take a Sandwich with or you will leave Hungry. I do not recommend this Restaurant to anyone. (And No, I am not a Big Eater and I am of average build but I was hungry!!!
