I lived a block away for years from chilis. I have to say the food was always the best. I lived for Sundays for I work restaurant buisness too and my day off was the Bloody Mary Brunch there. It was awesome. I have to say the steamers were and are the best on the beach!! And you can't beat the deals in the afternoon on them. Winters were ok because they did great tapas specials!! And do I need to say.... The bartenders damn sure know how to make a descent drink!!!! Many good times there and can't wait to get back home there and get my stool back at the bar. For you tourist coming to OBX don't skip this place... you will have missed out on a truly great time and food. Try the steamers , all of them. Love yall....Gypsy Cya Soon, keep a stool warm 4 me plez.
I'm a "regular" vacation beach bum to the OBX and I have to say that Chili Peppers is one of the best LOCAL hang outs down there. I've never felt is was geared to toward the "tourist" set. I've always had good service, I prefer to sit at the bar, and have waited for a seat. I have found some favorites on the menu, steamer baskets during happy hour, design your own omlette for brunch on Sundays. The prices are extreamly reasonable (they don't raise prices during "In Season" like some places down there.
To truely apprecieate Chili Peppers, try going mid afternoon, before it gets too busy (if it's raining, don't be in a rush, enjoy your wait, get an appetizer or something!). Don't be afraid to ask the server or a local what they think of a dish, honesty rules in this resturant.
Overated, but good.: I've eaten Chili Peppers only once, but that was enough for me. It lived up to the local stereotype of something just for the tourists. The house fish I had was obviously all they had left at the end of the day. I don't think dining at 8:00 PM should subject you to a lower quality/quantity piece of food. The fries, while seasoned nicely, we not crisp and greasy. The cocktail I had was poured heavily which I appreciated, but still it was only a so so meal. Lots of advertising and colorful island decor get tourists so excited that they think they're getting something special. Chili Peppers staff was a mix of very friendly folks, and those who obviously wanted off their shift. To be fair, our food did come out in a timely manner and our drinks were filled when they should have been. All and all an OK meal, and another T-Shirt restaurant at the beach.
