My husband and I ate there while on vacation this week. I'm vegetarian and my husband is not, so we were looking for someplace that would have something we both could enjoy. A description in a local newspaper stated that they had vegetarian fare. However, when we arrived, there were no vegetarian entrees listed on the menu. I believe they change the menu periodically. The waiter was extremely helpful and offered to ask the chef what he may be able to do for me. The chef came into the dining room to speak with me about designing a pasta dish that would suit my needs. It was very good! My husband ordered the steak special and said it was probably the best steak he had ever eaten. Both meals came with a house salad that puts other "house salads" to shame. Will definately return the next time we are in the area.
First of all, the service couldn't have been more excellent. Our waiter, Justin, was outstanding in his knowledge of the menu and his anticipation of our every need. One member of our party, Ben, is differently abled due to his autism, and Justin couldn't have been more sensitive to his unique communication needs while at the same time not being the least bit patronizing.
The food was equal to the service! We started with the bruschetta which was the finest, most flavorful- but light- apetizer I have ever enjoyed. Debbie thought the crab cake was the best she ever had, and commented on how little filler the chef used in its preparation. The uniquely flavored mashed potatoes were also a hit at our table.
For dessert, the apple crisp ala mode is simply indescribable in its delicate pastry flakiness and wonderful touch of cinnamon flavoring. A trip to the Avon Cafe would be worth it for the apple crisp alone.
The atmosphere was beautiful and relaxed. There were lighted candles on each table, ceiling fans overhead, and great music playing softly from the stereo speakers in the background. I would definately recommend the Avon Cafe as a must for any Outer Banks vacation.
