Went to Kelly's as saw they are a sponsor for the OBX Marathon. Found out that the owner is a runner as well. And Kelly's has their own 8K-the Running of the Leprechauns on St. Patrick's Day weekend-and their own parade-gee-how do you do all this? So-walked in mid-week -no reservations-20 minute wait-but it is August and have seen lines outside of a lot of restaurants. Happy to see that though they are known for coastal cuisine-and that that usually means seafood-which I can't eat-that they had beef and chicken and even vegetarian options. Went with the chicken veggie pasta-could not come close to finishing-wanted to soooo bad as it was excellent. My husband got the mixed grill and was in heaven with the seafood. Surprised that bread and salad came with the entree-at another OBX restaurant this week we had to pay extra for the salad. Might have been able to finish my pasta if I had not eaten so many sweet potato biscuits-which turns out to be their signature bread. Heard that it was to die for with either VA ham or cinnamon sugar butter-well-maybe another day. After dinner we went to the Tavern (also here) and took in a great band-no cover since we just had dinner. Little loud but two floors and two bars. Quite a place. Found out they have a bar menu-what prices-a deal-so plan to go back Marathon weekend. As for service-we had a veteran-Glenda-has been at Kelly's 20 years and knows the place and beach well-she was a lot of help w/local stuff-getting around-best buys. Actually got to meet the owner-he works the door and dining room-did not know that was who refilled my coffee cup-but hey-that is impressive these days.
Made reservations for 7pm were seated at 7:12 (what's the point). There were also a number of empty tables when we were seated finally.
Appetizer was good, we had the crab dip.
Service was poor, waitress got our order wrong. Then she asked my wife if she would eat hers while I waited for correct order so we just took what she brought. Crab stuffed flounder was good. Great wine list for location, lots of high end wines. However, this is not fine dining.
Great place to check out. A great club on one side featuring live music weekly as well as some fairly well known bands with a more upscale dinning experience on the restaurant side, a little expensive but worth the price.
