Visited Gin Mill for the first time on a Friday night with my girlfriend after doing the South End Gallery Crawl.
The bar isn't terribly big and there are sporadic tables and chairs spread out throught the place. They have a shuffleboard table, a few dart boards and some video games for entertainment. Music was modern rock and not too loud, which is nice when you're trying to have a conversation with someone! A live band was setting up as we were getting ready to leave, which is probably a good thing as we were sitting RIGHT next to the set-up area and I'm sure it would have been very loud once they started playing. I like live music but prefer not to sit on top of the band.
Apparently you seat yourself if you'd like something to eat, after asking for a menu from a bartender. The menu has typical bar fare with a few interesting selections, as well. The prices are reasonable for what is served. However, this is where things get odd. It seems as though any food orders are placed with Tavern on the Tracks next door so A) you have a long time to get your food and B) it stands a good chance of being cold when it arrives. My girl's teriyaki chicken salad showed up cooled off and not particularly tasty. She didn't even finish it, in fact. When I got my tab (which I had to go up to the bartender to pay), I informed her about the salad and asked for at least a discount. That's when I was told that the food came from next door and I'd have to go see them to complain about it. Say what?!
As a sidebar, I didn't see how you could lock the mens room door. Not terribly embarrasing if you're standing up but if you have other business, it could be a bit awkward if someone walked in on you!
Overall the atmosphere is decent and the music is fine but if you're looking for a place to sit down, have good conversation and a meal, it might be better to go to the Tavern next door.
