| About: | From 1836 to around 1861 this Federal-style building served as the first branch of the United States Mint. During the Depression it was saved from demolition through a community effort and became North Carolina's first art museum. Now it is one of the major collections of American, European, African, and Asian artwork, along with ceramics, photography, maps and contemporary art. There are daily tours, lectures, art classes, and festivals that invite the public to come and enjoy the exhibitions. With such an extensive collection of over 72,000 items and a building rich in history, this museum is a must-see for any art lover! Also be sure to check out the Mint Museum of Craft & Design , located in nearby Uptown. |

Fine art exists in Charlotte!: I visited the Mint Museum shortly after moving to Charlotte. They have free admission on Tuesdays after 5, so it's a great deal to go then and see some amazing works of art. The time I went, it was very quiet, I almost had the whole place to myself!
You will see some superior works of art, from paintings of King George III and Queen Charlotte that are about 250 years old, to amazing sculptures of different art forms and even contemporary artworks by some of the worlds most outstanding artists! An exhibit they had in place when I went was South American crafts that dated back 2000 years or more! Don't let the 'costume room' freak you out, I literally stepped back a second when I first encountered it but if you don't feel like you're being 'watched' by about 3 dozen mannequins displaying authentic clothing from the late 1700's and on, it's worth a look. The ladies will surely love it!
I actually left the museum with a slight tremble in my legs. I knew I had just been exposed to some incredible expressions of humanity and I plan on stopping there every few months or so to see what's new. It's not really a place for young children but older kids in their teens might enjoy it if they are into art and/or history. For adults, you HAVE to make it a must on your visit to Charlotte, or even if you live here!
