Cuisine: The food is better than anything you will find outside of Italy, and better than many in Italy. In fact it is better than most places in Rome. Great mid to northern Italian wine list including aged barbaresco, barolo, brunello and others (you must ask for a cellar list). The pizza is excellent but I go there for the other dishes, which are fantastic and made fresh from scratch as well. Be sure to request the garlic rolls and side salad with the wonderful creamy Italian dressing to begin with.
Price: This is a family business that does not accept credit cards; plan ahead. It seems that most of the bad reviews are based on this fact rather than the food (which is silly unless you go to restaurants for a different reason than I do, which is the food and spirits). This place is a favorite of locals. The prices are very reasonable, especially considering the quality of the food. Expect to spend much less than if you were to go to one of the local establishments that has a designated chef on staff.
VITO'S IS A GEM I agree with all who say it is closest italian restaurant you can find this side of the ATLANTIC, THE ONLY NEGATIVE IS THE CASH ONLY POLICY which really is not that much of a problem given the reasonable prices! the owner and staff are a true delight well worth a side trip
I recently attended a rehearsal dinner at Vito's. The service was terrible although the food was good. Most importantly I found out that the young groom, who was paying for this on his own and getting married the next morning, was completely and totally taken advantage of and basically stolen from by the manager. There were app. 23 guests who dined at the dinner. However, the young groom was charged for 30 dinners at $15 per person. He was told that regardless of how many people showed for the dinner he was still going to be charged for the amount of people he estimated would come!!! Can you imagine making reservations for (6), but only (4) show and yet you are charged for (6)
entrees just the same?! I have been in the restaurant business (full-service) for many years and NEVER would I consider charging someone for something they did not receive. Had anyone else at the dinner known this was going on, the manager would never have gotten away with what he did in taking advantage of this fine young man. There are fundamental principles of honesty and integrity at stake here, and I would not encourage anyone to support the business of one who would do business in this way, and "cash only" at that...
I understand your comment and must tell you that you are one of a kind if you would not charge for "no shows" at a scheduled rehersal dinner. I searched out many establishments for my son's rehersal dinner and at every single place I was told I would be responsible to pay the bill for the number of guests I had stated would be attending. This makes business sense to me in that the restaurant must order x amount of food to feed x amount of people. It should not be their loss if our guests do not attend. The same would be true if you invited x amount of guests and 6 more showed up. The restaurant owner should not charge for them either???
I recently paid $100 to my friend for a rehersal dinner in Pinehurst because I had told her I would attend but had a family emergency. When I found out she too had been charged $100 per person that did not show up, I gave her $100 to keep our friendship in tact because I knew the Country Club's policy about the client paying for the number of estimated guests. That is unfortunate for your friend, the groom that the owner didn't make that policy perfectly clear to him up front. And, if he did, it is still unfortunate that his friends/family that didn't attend didn't help him out with the bill. If you tell them up front that if they don't show up you will be charged x amount of money anyway (which in some cases is tacky!!!) I think your family/friends would be more aware of the importance of them attending or at least calling the groom to say they couldn't be there so he could replace them knowing he was paying for their meal. This is a catch 22 situation, and I do understand your being upset. The thing that upsets me is that they only accept cash. Sounds like some "hanky panky" going on there with the IRS?????
