My family and I decided to try this place out on Sunday. We were seated fairly quickly. Then the experience went downhill from that point. We asked the server her suggestion on an appetizer, crab stuffed mushrooms. I am almost positive the crab meat was canned. We realized there was no bread or crackers with the appetizer. Then the server informed us that the bakery order was underestimated and they were out of bread. But they had frozen loaves that they could warm up if we liked. Next the salad was served. The disappointing $4 salad was iceberg lettuce with dressing, couple red onion slices and two cherry tomatoes. Donât forget the two oil soaked croutons. For $1 we would have had a better salad from Wendyâs. Then the $17 entrées came on Dixie plate sized plates. The grilled chicken was dry and the fish was on the verge of being over cooked. With this restaurant being on the water you would expect better portions and the seafood prepared in a more appetizing manner. The icing on the cake was the check. Apparently we didnât see the fine print that 15% gratuity is added with a table of five or more. So we paid $101 for overpriced, overcooked meal. We would have happier driving through Hardeesâs for a 5 dollar burger and fries. At least we would have got what we paid for.
Bottom line: great service, mediocre food, high prices. The ambiance/decor is... well, dated and plain. The gentleman that owns the place is very nice and will come by and shake your hand. We were there on a slow night and he offered us a sampling of his soups, She-Crab or Clam Chowder. I took the chowder and it was really good. We ordered the daily special Hot Crab Dip appetizer for $7.95. Disappointing - not a lot of crab meat, and served with what looked like imitation cheddar cheese sprinkled on top. Carr's Water Crackers and tri-colored corn chips were served with it. Ho hum. We were served standard-fare iceburg lettuce salads on a too-small plate with likely bottled/Sysco-brand dressing in a mini Solo cup. The bread served before the meal was probably a grocery-store brand Italian bread served with Land-O-Lakes butter. I think they sprinkled parmesan cheese and some dried herbs on top to try and make it their own. The main meals, fried-seafood combos, arrived very hot, and were very large portions, but were a little undercooked and soggy. Highly doubtful the shrimp was fresh, although there were several shrimp boats in the pier (they never said it was or wasn't fresh or even local, and it tasted as if it had been frozen). For the price we paid per entree (about $17 each, not including drinks, etc.) I feel like we could have had better salads and bread, at the least. Although the service was really good, and as was previously mentioned by another reviewer, the staff works as a team, I was pretty disappointed in the food and expected better. This place has so much untapped potential for its location and fresh seafood resources from some of the local fishmongers. This restaurant could REALLY use the help of a professional chef.
