This is the place, where, in 1940, entertainer Jimmy Durante stopped with his band. The owner at that time, Lucy Coleman, a pretty woman of about 28 years old, chatted with Mr. Durante. When he left the restaurant, he said, "Goodnight, Mrs. Calabash." "Goodnight, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are" became his sign-off line on radio and then TV.
This was the nastiest and slowest place I have ever been to in my life. Took an hour to get our food and when we did it so greasy and nasty. The shrimp were bad and smelled rotten. I have lived on the coast of NC all my life and have never experienced nasty seafood like I did at this place. We will NEVER go back.
Coleman's is a Calabash institution. The oysters this year were fabulous! You must go once to try the local fair- when they say local and fresh- they mean it!
