This is an amazing place and an inspiring preservation story. A state highway once cut through where the palace is today, now in its original location. The main house burned down in the late 1790s and was entirely rebuilt in the 1950s from the original drawings by architect John Hawks and descriptions from letters and diaries of the time. You get a real sense of authenticity here, and it feels more like a renovation than a rebuilding. There are three more historic houses on the property, outbuildings, and the New Bern Academy a few blocks away. You will need a whole day to "do" Tryon Palace. The costumed interpretors are great and fun to talk to, especially the folks at the Hay House. All classes of people from the late 1700s and early 1800s are represented. It is interesting to hear the servants' take on life in those times. It's a great learning experience. Very nice gift shop, too!
