Wow! Was that a negative review for my Mtn Perks? I am a Bryson City local and Mtn Perks is the only place in town I will eat. The prices are very fair.....where else can you get a cup of fair trade organic coffee for $1.07? Nowhere! And if I enjoy it in their friendly atmosphere I even get a free refill.
On any given day I am surrounded by lots of interesting local regular folks. Mostly men! This afternoon I encountered the regular group drinkin' coffee on the "veranda" as they refer to it. There was a local poet (male), a drivers ed teacher (along with his uncle and dad), an oldtime banjo player (male), a sweat lodge owner (male), a computer tech guy......and so on. All men and I have never seen them treated as anything other than valued guests.
I also read the menu. Actually, the prices listed by the gentleman below me are wrong. A hammerhead (coffee with espresso) is only $3.00 and that's with a double shot! All of their drinks are based off of double shots! So, the one dollar is for ADDING a third shot.
As for the laptops.....they are not an internet cafe nor do they advertise as such. The wi-fi is simply a perk for the customers. As far as I know, laptops before and after 2001 come with batteries! I hate coming in and not being able to find a seat because some guy or gal has taken up a four seater table with one person and a laptop. I am 28. I do not own a computer. I value this coffeehouse for the amazing conversation and the friends I've made. You miss out on a lot of great things going on around you......like John quoting poetry, the morning cigar club ( all men) and so on.
I wont let one bad review ruin my favorite spot!! Hope to see you there.
Despite promising a friendly atmosphere, the owners of the Mountain Perks don't really like men, and will act in a passively aggressive manner towards them. I thought it was just me, although I strive to not offend. After to speaking to several locals in Bryson City, it became clear that unless you have a uterus, you will not be welcome there.
Also, despite having free wireless, they will not allow customers to use the electrical outlets by the tables, citing "power surges" as the reason. Of course, most laptops manufactured after 2001 have been designed with surges and spikes in mind, but don't try explaining this to these creatures. They will make it clear that nowhere does it say "internet cafe" on their door.
Pricing is ridiculous and arbitrary. A small coffee with a shot of espresso will set you back $3.50, despite the menu stating that a small coffee is $1 and a shot of espresso is $1.
Overall, if you need to get some work done in a friendly (no matter what gender you are) you are better off going down the street to "Across the Trax" where the internet is good, the beer is cold and the staff are helpful and professional.
i love this place. great coffee, great food, even better people. mel and deb are awesome! and dont forget dessert!

Actually, Coffee Shop Connoisseur is right, though perhaps not about them being friendly to females. I found the establishment (owners) very unfriendly and have not been back.
Sorry Latte Expert, you have to hear from those who doesn't come there on daily basis. Most of the time they were not friendly to everybody period unless you know them or hangout there often for them to recognize you :). But now they have a new owner and they are friendly,so I'll give them a try again. The location, the foods and drinks are great. That's whats keeping me visit them despite the no smile no hello or thanks.
