I stayed at this campground many years ago and recently stayed again. Realizing that this camprground was in exsistence long before the larger campers and rv's with multi-slideouts of today were built, I was disappointed to find that this campground has done very little, if any, to accomodate the changes in modern day camping. I will divide my review into two areas; the site and bathhouse.
Sites: Some sites have concrete patios, while others do not. Drainage from rain is a huge problem with some sites having deep tire ruts and craters from water logged ground. Some sites have standing water and are unusable. Some sites have a little gravel to pull your camper on, while other have nothing. The sites are way too close together. Patios are about 6 inches apart and campers face door to door. I saw several awnings overlap each other on sites where campers were door to door. In those situaitons, you have zero privacy. Slideouts of your backdoor neighbor are within inches, literally. My slideout and my backdoor neighbors were about 4 inches apart. They had to hook their water before letting the slide out or they would not have been able to access the water supply. Only one water supply valve is available for two campsites, so someone must have a gated wye valve and share with your neighbor or you are in trouble. I personally witnessed several campers pulling in, which is a driving skill in and of itself with the campsites as close as they are, only to have to pull out and be reassigned because they couldn't get their slideouts mobilized without hitting their neibhbors camper. Not every site is like this, but a majority are.
Bathouses: Bathhouses were clean for the most part. Best I could tell they were cleaned once a day. Supplies such as toliet paper and hand towels were not checked very day as the handtowel dispenser in the men's side stayed empty for two days. Commode stalls and shower stalls were plentiful. No heat or air made for some very cold showers and cold toliet seats with temps in the low 50's and 40's. Water pressure in the shower was poor. The shower stalls were large, but there was no bench/seat available to put your clothing, tolietries, or to use to dress. There were only two or three nails to hang your clothing/towel from and no place to lay soap or bath wash when not in use. A constant sewer smell was present when the shower water was running.
Other amenities available that I will mention in fairness, but will not comment on becasue I didn't use/participate in are a game room, basketball goal, swimming pool (which was closed for the winter), and some basic activities for kids. The campground is in a convienant location and some sites abutted a nice creek. Overall, the price, which was about half of the normal seasonal rate, was good at about $25 per night, which included a couple of additional adults, taxes, cable TV and Wi-Fi. If you are fortunate to get one of the better sites,( which I would rate as being about a half dozen tops), it's OK. If you were like us and could have kissed your next door neighbor through windows of your back to back slideouts , then not good. We were fortunate that no one used the site to our front side and I believe that was the case only because no camper came in that was small enough to put on it.
I was also very saddened to see a tatered and torn American flag hanging from their flagpole. A disgrace to let a flag in that kind of shape be a symbol of the sacrifice of our men and women taking care of business on foreign soil even as I type.
I will not take the chance on getting one of the lucky sites. This old dog is a quick study and will look elsewhere for my camping services in the Maggie Valley area. Unless they make some drastic changes in their site layouts and general ground maintanence, I have built my last campfire at Stonebridge.
a super place to stay: we have stayed in this campground twice and its fabulous. the people are so nice who run the campground. it's clean and well taken care of. we are going back in a week and can't wait. the pool is very clean as are the bathrooms. its centrally located and near everything.
