My experience with ARS was good initally as long as I did not require any maintenance or repair of their system. I purchased a HVAC unit in 2004 with warranty. Well, this year the thermostat stopped working. The transaction occured via my property manager (on my behalf) and ARS. I informed the service man that I know it was the thermostat because the system was working fine the day before and I had another system purchased around the same time (for another home) recently require a thermostat. The service man said he had to perform the diagnostic test first. I was quoted $290 to replace the thermostat and $90 service charge (diagnostic test). When questioning, about my warrantly and investigating the cost of the thermostat ($49- Honeywell Focus PRO 5000: Non-programmable Digital Thermostat), the service man became defensive and stated that if I did not want the thermostat installed, I still owed him $90 for the trip. But he was willing to wave the $90 service fee since I was military. And when calling the main office, I was informed by the office manager, that $290 was a discount, because people not under warranty would pay $380 plus the service fee. When informing the manager of the thermostat cost of $49 and the manufacturer's 5-year warranty she placed me on hold. When returning to the phone, the office manager unable to provide an adequate explanation for the charge. The office manager quoted me the price of $290 which included the diagnostic/service charge and stated she would speak to the service man. I requested a price list and I was assured by the office manager, that one would be mailed to me. Two months have lapsed and I have not received the price list. Aditionally, the office manager informed me that ARS is aware that their prices are higher than most companies in the area. My suggestions: (1)Conduct a comparative price analysis between at least 3 companies before commiting to one (unless, this is an emergency), (2) ensure the price quoted is in writing and (3) verify your warranty details. In the end, the (2)HVAC units are working properly and adequately cooling the home.
