| About: | Set away from the hustle and bustle of the touristy part of downtown, Hominy Grill is located in the first floor of an 1897 shotgun dwelling, with its original pounded tin ceiling still in place. While the atmosphere is casually elegant, this place is all about the food: Shrimp Creole, Sauteed Shad Row with Bacon & Mushrooms, Shrimp Gumbo, Chicken Country Captain and Buttermilk Pie are some of the soul-satisfying southern dishes served here. The Friday Night Fish Fry features a fresh local catch every week. Monday through Friday the restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Saturdays and Sundays the restaurant is only open for brunch. |

This was by far the most memorable dining experience I had on my first trip to Charleston last week. The restaurant itself is charming; we ate on the pleasant outdoor patio, which was shielded nicely from the streets. Service was very friendly and attentive. The food itself was delicious; I got the 3 veggie platter with sweet potatoes, mac and cheese, and tomatoes and okra. Loved all three. I also tried the grits, squash casserole, apple sauce, and green beans from my family member's plates-delish. For dessert, I had to try their famous chocolate pudding, and it didn't disappoint. I also had a bite of their pecan pie, which was probably the best pecan pie I've ever tasted. All in all, I highly recommend this place if you want to try some good southern cuisine. I look forward to visiting again.
Excellent place for dinner but they are most famous for their breakfast. Vast selection of veggies (hoppin john is black eyed peas and rice?!) and the shrimp and grits had a nice spice but the grits couldda been a bit fluffier. Nice atmosphere, worth a visit.
Went to Hominy with a group of friends (seven of us). The food was good for the most part. I had the creole potroast with grits and mac n' chez. The cornbread was great (althought it was $2 extra for 1 slice!) The potroast was good, but the mac n' chez was pretty bland. The worst part was that they have no computer. There was no way to separate our checks. Once they agreed to separate the check it took about 30 minutes to finally check out. I would only recommend going if someone is picking up the check for everyone.
