Great breakfast, great service, nice atmosphere. Too bad the lunch and dinner don't measure up.

Highest raves to Chris Kelso, chef of the Wentworth Grill, located at the Renaissance Hotel. We dined at several of the "best" restaurants in historic Charleston, but nothing was as good as the meals we had at the Wentworth Grill. Chef Chris really knows how to prepare seafood. His fried oyster appetizer was unbelievable; creative, unusual, delicious. The crab cakes were superb; you would have to travel to the Eastern Shore of Maryland to get anything comparable. The halibut was nothing short of remarkable. Soups, appetizers, salads, desserts ... spectacular presentation, unusual and creative taste combinations, careful preparation, with attention to detail made every meal an interesting and pleasurable experience. Portion size was ample without being overwhelming. Service was excellent, and Chef Chris often came out of the kitchen to ask our opinion and to be sure we were satisfied with his food. Many restaurants seem to fall down on their dessert options and offer desserts that are purchased from commercial bakeries or are done poorly on site. Chef Chris is a master baker, and has created an amazing assortment of dessert classics that will appeal to the most discriminating sweet tooth. His bread pudding was delectable, but the pecan pie was to die for! Built on a pastry round, laced with bourbon, chock full of pecans, topped with homemade vanilla bean ice cream, and smothered with chocolate, it was all that a dessert could hope to be. As a dessert or as a palate cleanser, ask for the berry lime sorbet with lime zest. This dish is a good example of how Chef Chris works with complimentary flavors, with the sweet of the berry and the tang of the lime. At the Wentworth Grill the food is remarkably good; the service is also excellent and the setting is comfortable and romantic. It is wonderful to walk away from a meal feeling satisfied without feeling bloated. It is also wonderful to believe you have gotten good value for the money rather than having been taken advantage of by the "tourist town" mentality of many local restaurants. We are looking forward to returning again to the Wentworth Grill because everything on the menu looks and sounds so appealing we want to try it all. We give this restaurant the highest recommendation, and expect it will become known as the best restaurant in Charleston.

I travel for a living and and have eaten at many differnt types of restaurnats. We have been here twice this summner and both times were spectacular! We had a 5 course dinner and were very impressed by the flavor, presentation, and portion size of all courses. The shrimp and grits were unbelieveable. Most of the time, shrimp and grits are to spicy for me but this chef did a mouth watering creamy grit and it was wonderful. The chocolate peanut butter won ton was "to die for". Ask for it when you go!!!! The tuna was awsome and I really am not a fish lover but tried because my husband does love fish. I can promise you, the next time we go to Charleston, we will stay at this hotel, request another chef's tasting evening, and enjoy it just as we did this past summer. We believe they should have packages where you can have a private chef's tasting one evening during your stay. Keep up the good work chef!!!
