| About: | This 18th century plantation is home to the oldest landscaped gardens in America. Known for beautiful geometry and symmetry, the gardens run along the West bank of the Ashley River. On these magnificent grounds is the House Museum, once home to Arthur Middleton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The house, filled with period antiques, has survived both fire and earthquake. Guided tours given on the half hour. |

This is a georgous place to visit. There are the old slave cabin and cemetary, the house has been recreated near the site the old house stood that was burned during the Civil War. Rich is history. A good dining room w. tasty food and gift shop. There is a nursery of many of the plantings for sale that are growing in the Middleton gardens. I trust their nursey stock and buy from there. The gardens are beautiful and camellias are lovely. There is a small village with many craftans and animals.
Absolutely beautiful. The entire plantation is gorgeous. There is a lot to do on the grounds. The tours are great and the museum gift shop has an eccletic array of goods from local artisans. The garden market is nice breezy open air store where you can have a snack or coffee under massive pine trees.
Don't forget to ask about Kung Fu Monkey Brand Red Dragon Pepper Sauce, it's available at the Garden Market. One of Charleston's few gourmet hot sauces.
