I been eating eber sence I were born on the shrimp boat. I like seafood. I like good service. I'm a good cook. Russel's cooks most nigh like what I were raised on and the sweet ladys what bring your food is always polite. I been amazed at all the people what eat there. All kinds and some wid chillen. This is a nice place. Wish there were more like it nearer ta home. Oh, Bonnie Lou, my dog likes tha scraps n I can't neber eat it all. Thank you.

We ate at Russell's based on the recommendation of a friend who vacations often in the Litchfield Beach area. Service was good and the wait staff did an excellent job without excessive interruptions in our conversation. Serving size on all entrees that were ordered was good for the price. The complimentary hushpuppies and honey butter are a nice starter while trying to decide on your order. Most meals come with a salad; I enjoyed the raspberry vinaigrette dressing with mine. We shared the crab/shrimp dip and clams with melted cheese appetizers- both weren't bad but the clams were dominated by the cheese and it was difficult to find the crab in the dip.

Entrees of blackened grouper were served hot and fresh with ample sides. The fried softshell crabs suffered from a dominant and heavy breading that made it difficult to enjoy the taste of the crab. A lighter, tempura-styled breading would have made a big difference here. Entrees ranged from $18-27, and the appetizers were priced from $4-9 each. There were a number of other shrimp, clam, and oyster (steamed and raw) meals offered on the menu as well.

Overall, the service was excellent and the atmosphere was very relaxed. I wasn't terribly impressed with the preparation and the quality of the meal but the prices are competitive with similar restaurants in the area (I base my satisfaction on having regularly eaten at Charleston area seafood restaurants with a similar price point, which may be an unfair comparison for the area). Our evening was very enjoyable and the outside dining area looked appealing. And as others mention, the owner is friendly and makes sure to welcome you and bid you farewell.

We discovered Russell's last year (Summer 2008). We were trying to get away from the gimmicky restaurants in the inlet and find something a little more authentic. Mission accomplished! This year (2009) we ate there twice and it was great both times. Try to sit outside if you like the outdoors like we do. Their soft shell crab is to die for when it's in season (spring). The owner is usually there and comes by to check on you. All in all, an authentic seafood restaurant without a gimmick serving great food.
