We had been to Crown Reef Tower Three in 2009 and it was fairly nice. This time we went (July, 2011) and had room 614 in Tower One (oldest section). The place is beautiful from the Ocean Blvd. with fresh paint and purple lights and the pools were sparkling and nice. Leaving the garage to the room it looked like slums--very dirty and wet. There remained a pool of water in front of the elevators (which are slow and rickety), so you are standing in water pressing an electric button. OSHA would condemn the place. The carpets in the hallways are torn and filthy and the room was no better. The bed mattresses were worn and felt like sleeping on box springs only and you could feel the metal rim. Behind the Murphy bed was a pile of trash. There were carpet spikes sticking up in doorways and we couldn't go bare footed. In the 3 nights we were there the elevators went out of service twice. I am 70 years old and had to climb 6 flights of stairs and injured my knee, which is still hurting...I called to complain and the front desk clerk said that maintenance said the elevators were all working...I said then they are lying...they offered my a $20 dollar refund on our $200/night room and I said I would rather just give them a bad rating...I didn't take the money. One morning after a hard rain, the garage had ponds of water everywhere and my shoes got soaked...almost ruined my orthotics. I would not recommend this place to an enemy, and I and my family will never stay there again. Someone told us that new owners are just letting maintenance go except for the shiny purple lighted facade. Don't waste your money nor take a chance on your health.

I just returned from my recent stay at the Crown Reef. I was there from July 8-10, 2011. As this was my first time going to Myrtle Beach, I was looking forward to my stay. Thus, I was quite disappointed when the hotel was nothing! like the pictures. I will tell anyone DO NOT stay at the Crown Reef unless you are okay being surrounded with filth, trash, musty odors etc. Please find below my experience and I have pictures to support all that I say! When we arrived, we checked in at the conference cntr which is across the street. The conference cntr looked nice, the women's batchroom was clean, the ballroom was being set up for a family reunion function. Nicely decorated I might add. Everything appears to look nice so it didn't dawn on us there was a reason the Crown Reef has you pay for your stay up front. We went across the street and we checked our rooms. I was with a large group so my review is based on more than just my one room. My girlfriend stayed in tower 1 on the 6th floor. Just outside her door was a pile of dirty hotel laundry with a used diaper on top. Her room smelled of Clorox which was a good thing, but the dirt was so visable not sure what was cleaned. There was a red stain on her closet door either ketchup or blood. No signs of bed bugs, new mattress maybe, bot the box spring needed to be replaced. Dirt and musty odors are a hotel theme so you will find both all throughout the hotel. My room was in Tower 3 lobby level. I swear my room smelled of urine, but my friends said it was just musty and needed some air. But I will tell you it did not smell of Clorox as my friend's room so not sure if housekeeping cleaned. The mattresses and box springs on both beds needed to be replaced. The box springs alone had a huge unidentifiable brown stains on the sides. Not sure what they were. The cleanest area in our room was the shower which was pristine white. The inside of the refrigerator was clean too. The microwave could use some cleaning. How did we survive? I bought a hoodie for my son which he slept in along with shorts and pj pants. Shoe/flip flops of some sort was worn at all times. Also, we only stayed in the room as we needed. Whoever owns the hotel needs to get out of the business. If the hotel is not going to be maintained then sell it! It is disgusting to lure guests with beautiful pictures and then take their money and charge a resort fee. Crown Reef got me once, won't get me twice! And, I hope my review will help someone else from being had.

Just arrived home from our stay at the Crown Reef. (May 2011) We have stayed here several times during bike week. It's always been nice and clean. The place was empty! Never had to wait on an elavator, buggies for loading and unloading were always there, and service was good. I do suggest it is time to do some upgrading. The place is getting worn and it shows. The same friendly staff was there to take care of all our needs, just needs a little serious cleaning, painting, and carpet!
