My wife and I have driven past The Peddler Steakhouse many times to and from Furman visiting our daughter; each time we promise to stop next time. Last Saturday (6/13/2009) we were in town and made the time to stop in and dine. Growing up in Spartanburg I dined at The Peddler often, but the last time was on our first wedding anniversary in 1986. I am pleased to see that some things remain the same over the years. We love the eclectic salad bar, with every ingredient imaginable from beets to smoked oysters. My wife had rib-eye trimmed and served rare, I had prime rib medium rare with the proper amount of marbling, not to fat. Both steaks were excellent and the service was fine- friendly and helpful but neither intrusive nor overbearing. In fact we had several servers and the owner inquire as to our needs and make friendly smalltalk! The air of the sun room/ porch was so cozy and friendly, with the feel of outdoors but not the rain. We are steak lovers, have dined in many nicer steakhouses, and overpaid many times for pompous wait staff and lower quality steaks. We arrived at 6:45, were promptly seated and served, changed tables for a better view, enjoyed a casual dinner, and were rewarded by a modest bill and early departure of 8:15. This was a rare find in casual yet quality dining- the perfect combination in a handsome stone home! Reminds us of Buck's T4 ranch in Montana, only within driving distance. Dinner at Ruth's Chris or Morton's cost much more- I only wanted to borrow their ambiance, not buy it!! Sign us up as new Charleston regulars, we will see you soon and often at The Peddler.

My wife and I have been eating at the Peddler in Greenville since the early 1970's. The current owners, George & Deb Schneider, are the best ever. I've NEVER had a bad meal at the Peddler, nor have I ever experienced dirty silverware, plates, or glasses. Very unique bar with super great bartender. Excellent salad bar (but the frozen fruit bowl is TOO frozen most of the time). Only salad bar where I can find anchovies!! ABSOLUTELY THE BEST fillet in Greenville, bar none (and there are some other good places). We love sitting out on the porch at all seasons. Most of our wait times on Sat. eve. are 45 min. up to 1 1/2 hours, but it is worth the wait. Servers are usually very good. One server, Rosa, our favorite, has been there for 20 years or so. Great chicken, tuna, and salmon, which you can also get blackened. Great prime rib. Lots of old antiques all over the place, purchased by the original owner. In an old stone house built before WW1, but enlarged. A delightful place with great food!

This is the best restaurant in Greenville hands down. My wife and I loved the atmosphere and the ambiance was everything we were hoping for. The salad bar was very extensive and had everything we could hope for. Our servers name was Wes and he gave us better service than we have had in Greenville in years. He was the picture of perfection as far as service goes. The food was excellent and we are very excited about returning soon.
