My family and I stopped at Gullah Grub on the way to Hunting Island after seeing it on the food channel. We were so disappointed that the food was called Gullah Food because the quality and quantity were not in keeping with what I have experience eating from other Gullah persons. The rice was hard and old, the shrimp was fried in old grease and tasted tainted so we could not eat it. The menu was very limited, the dished were greasy and the restroom smelled. The price was much too high for lunch and the waitress was inappropriately dressed. It was an experience that we will not repeat. We would not recommend to people who know good Gullah Food. Not a place to send your friends.
We stopped at this restaurant on our way to Harbor Island. My husband ordered red rice, BBQ chicken, collard greens, and peach cobbler for me and he got for himself white rice, fried shrimp, and collard greens. My chicken was overcooked, the rice did not have any moisture in it and the greens tasted "gritty" and it was cold. The peach cobbler had way too much nutmeg, so overall, the service rendered was very friendly, but the food itself, I would not eat there again.
Great local fare: This family-run restaurant provided a wonderful taste of the local gullah cuisine. We ordered the "swamp water" mix of sweet tea and lemonade, shrimp gumbo, fried chicken, collards and macaroni and cheese. Meals are served with corn bread. The food was tasty and service is friendly and the wait-time reasonable. No children's menu, but it is a kid-friendly atmosphere.
This is a good place to visit on your way to or from the Penn Center, and the Red Piano Too art gallery (across the street). Don't let the simple exterior turn you away, the food is worth a visit.
