I've been going to this store for a few years since it is the only Asian Grocer in Athens that I know of. I liked the fact that it is affordable, but most Asian stores are. It is small and can be hard getting around even if just a few people are in there. My biggest problem with the store is the owner.
At first I thought she just was not very sociable, dry, but I have experienced more than once a less than friendly comment or two from her.
I love food, all kinds and love experiencing new things and cooking new things...well, I'll just say the lady comes off as if she is offended everytime I have a question or comment about a product. I mentioned freezing tofu and then thawing it and wringing out the water to give it a meatier texture when cooking it and she rolled her eyes saying "You Gringos are so strange". I then informed her that I learned that technique from a Japanese Chef and she just rolled her eyes. I guess I'm just a stupid Gringo as well? Ok, but Japanese was my language of study for two years in college and have been cooking asian cuisine for 25 years.
That's just one time too, there were several. I went back regularly because it was the only one in Athens, and I didn't discover the H Mart and Hong Kong Market until about a year ago.
This last trip to Fooks was my last I asked her a question about preparing this product she does not carry that I got at the Hong Kong Market on Jimmy Carter Blvd in Gwinnet. She sarcastically stated " Why don't I ask the Hong Kong Market". If I hadn't already paid for all my groceries , I would have walked out.
It is very hard to find anyone at the HKM that speaks English and since I know that the Fooks Food Lady has taught classes on Asian cooking, she might know.Again, I guess she was offended that the stupid Gringo would ask a question while sinking another wad of cash in her store, I have spent alot of money at Fooks.
I will drive to The Super H Mart or Hong Kong Market for now on, they are less than an a hour away, gigantic places and are the best places for anything Asian-and the people are nice too no matter what language they speak, the food courts at both rock as well. Please though, will someone open up another Asian Grocery store in Athens, Fooks lost a good , regular customer today!
Traveling through Athens for business and needed to find an Asian food mart as I could not get down to Atlanta soon enough. Found Fooks on Yahoo Local and read the good reviews. I agree completely. It's a small store but has the essentials at fair prices. Although I chose to buy a large bag of Nishiki rice, they offer dispensers so you can purchase smaller amounts; very cool! The lady at the register (assuming she was the owner) was nice and helpful and turned me on to a different soy sauce than I am used to.
I plan on being in the Athens area on a regular basis and will make a point of doing much of my Asian food shopping here. And so should you.
This is a great Asian grocery store that is a MUST visit for anyone and everyone with a knack for good food!.. It is extremely well stocked with fresh vegetables and also the ingredients and condiments needed to make the so-called "authentic" Asian food. A wide selection of paste, noodles, frozen goods and even ice-cream that has an Asian-influence. There is surely something for everyone in this great store!
