I went to the French Market Grille in Surrey Center for the first time this past weekend and was not impressed. I had heard good things about FMG and had seen advertisements in the Metro Spirit but could not understand what all the buzz was about. The waitress was not friendly. I ordered a Mai Thai, a cocktail, and it was weak and full of ice. I usually have leftovers from whatever I order at a restaurant, but FMG's portions were not very big. That was disappointing considering everything on the menu is expensive. The other thing I hate is that they give you an "appropriate" side item with your entree meaning the restaurant chooses the side for you. I was given rice, which turned out to be very bland. I will never go there again.

My husband and I ate here for our anniversary shortly after moving to the area. After the appetizer, which had us both thinking, it was downhill. The Cajun-Creole main dish was a bland knock-off of the traditional recipe. The seafood main dish was simply unremarkable. The vegetables were overcooked, although I think I remember some garlic mashed potatoes that were good.

The chocolate mousse was the biggest disappointment. A good chocolate mousse requires no more frills and baubles than an evening dress on Angelina Jolie. This one had Hershey's - style syrup and snowcaps of whipped cream out of the can, obscurring the taste. We hope there are other restaurants around which live up to their press.

To be honest I wasn't that impressed... we went for lunch and the service was slow, the food was mediocre and for all the hype I was expecting a much better experience than what we had.
