Loved it! The food was great, along with the service. This was one of the best stops made during my trip..:)
A couple of years ago I went to Athena's with 2 of my friend and our children. All of our children were 5 years old and very well behaved. To emphasize this point we had two seperate older couples stop and comment on how well behaved the children were. I had been to Athena's previously with my husband and recommended it. If only I had known. Athena's (at least at that time) did not have a children's menu, so we ended up each buying a hamburger meal and splitting it with our children. The waitress seemed very upset about us splitting the meals with the childen. We also all got water to drink. When the bill arrived we were charged a $3.00 plate splitting fee each and also charged for our water. When we went up to pay we questioned the lady at the cash register (I assume the owner or manager, not quite sure) about this, they said that it was standard practice. When we asked why we weren't informed about the plate splitting fee we were again told it was standard practice and they didn't have to explain it. She then went on to say we don't really want children in our restaurant. We said that the children were well behaved and weren't a problem. She then told us that she didn't want our tourist money and that she had plenty of locals to support her with out us coming in. We were shocked! We had not caused a scene, we had questioned her quietly and we end up getting yelled at and told we weren't wanted. Go figure! I grew up about 30 miles from St. Augustine and have lived in Florida most of my life, as had my friends. I don't consider myself a tourist. But, I can guarantee you we won't be back at Athena's ever again.
We ordered the standard greek fare: gyros and baklava. They were delicious. They didn't skimp on the meat on the gyro. The service was good. Highly recommended!
