We've ate at Cafe Eleven probably a dozen times over the last 2 years and have been generally pleased, but they lost themselves a customer last weekend with a horrible experience. We always utilize their outdoor seating because we bring our well-behaved dogs with us - every time we seem to meet great people there who also bring their dogs with them. However, on Saturday, a mean old woman claiming to be the owner approached us and didn't say "sorry, we don't allow dogs here any longer", she opened the conversation with a threat to call the police to ticket us because bringing dogs to a restaurant, even with outdoor seating was illegal, a $250 fine. Further, she told us that this had always been the case and when I commented that I had eaten here many times before with the dogs, she told me this was not true. We left and took our dogs to a restaurant across the street and happily ate there - a quick phone reveals that St.Augustine adopted Florida's "Doggy Dining" Ordinance in 2006 that permits this at outdoor seating areas of willing establishments.
If you don't want people to bring dogs to your restaurant, fine, I have no problem with that. But don't accuse me of being a liar and don't make rude, ridiculous threats in lieu of simply asking us to go elsewhere with our dogs!
We have been to cafe eleven five times. the food is always fresh
the service is great we like to sit outside. they have a wide
menu to choose from, you cant beat the hummis its the best.
i promise you wont be dissapointed. Just go its all good !!!!!!!
This place is like no other, so don't be freaked out by servers with tattoos, punk hair or having to go up on stage to fill your brunch plate. The food is very good and vegans will feel right at home. My favorite is the mac and cheese (yummy) and the hummus with veggies. Its better ordered cold than hot in my opinion. All of their sandwiches come on bread that is difficult to eat, especially for children. It is a neat place to go to.

I am the "mean old woman claiming to be the owner." I did not threaten to call the police and all the things you said. According to the State of Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulations, Division of Hotels and Restaurants, no animals are to be in the area where food is served. St. Augustine Beach was not adopted into the Florida's Doggy Dining Ordinance in 2006. The Beach had to pass an ordinance in order for pets to be allowed in outside food areas which just recently passed on July 1, 2009. The permits are not yet ready and there are rules and regulations that have to be in place before any dogs are allowed in the patio eating area at Cafe Eleven. We did allow dogs previously until the inspector cited us on a dog being in the outside eating area. As a restaurant owner, I have to play by the rules. Maybe you should run a restaurant and see what you deal with.
