Venue is small but comfortable, its more a bar than a nightclub but they often have great underground acts. You feel safe inside and out(don't be afraid of the doorman, he's good people). Alcohol is expensive per my aquantances as I do not drink. I have seen two great shows there, the best being Will Oldham with Bonny Prince Billie. Admission is reasonable.
Best Start for New Music in Jacksonville: Recent Jack Rabbits shows
Saw the Detroit Cobras at JR's. A good excuse to witness some loose, fun music. Watching them, one thing that became immediately apparent was the precision of their take on garage rock. The power and sass of lead singer Rachel Nagy was also impressive (fav tune: "Cha Cha Twist").
Also saw Electric Six at Jack Rabbits. The warm up band was an Interpol knock-off called She Wants Revenge. Lame and predictable. Half the audience of high school hipsters left after they finished. Electric Six were loads were loads of fun and exactly what you'd expect from a band that penned "Naked Pictures (of Your Mother)".
The Warlocks were also incredible even though the show was very short (45mins) and about two dozen people bothered to show up. Before the show I was ordering a Yuengling and overheard the one of Warlocks negotiating an agreement regarding the band's bar tab. I think they were a bit put off by the fact the venue didn't have a liquor license. For such a small club they attempted to build a bit of drama on stage. Heavy on fog machine and lit by red light, it was half way into their set when I realized they had two drummers (high point: "ItÂ’s Just Like Surgery").
Perfect Hole In the Wall: Great live music in an itty bitty bar! Gritty, real, hardcore setting for some of Jax's best shows
