My wife and I came up from Tampa to stay in the Jacksonville area for the weekend. We really wanted to try a "mom & pops" seafood establishment. We saw Gene's and decided to try it (big mistake). The service is horrible, the food was bland but they do give you large portions. We simply did not have a good experience at Gene's My wife and I vowed to never go back
Local Watering Hole w/ Added Bonus--Great Seafood!: I have to confess, it wasn't the food that originally brought me to this place. "The Blue Marlin" is a cozy little bar that is part of the restaurant itself. I had gone there to meet with some friend and wet the proverbial whistle. Great bar staff....some better than others, but no bad ones when I've been there.
As for the food...some of the freshest seafood I've had here in Florida, and definately here in Jax. I would certainly check this place out if I were you.

Its a great place prices are reasonable and they generous with the portions. Oysters are veary good and large on the half shell. I am a frquent flier and I never leave hungry. I live in the area and I am less than a mile from Gene's Happy Hour from 2:00-7:00. Everyone in the Lakewood area suport Gene's we need to keep them in busness and just think you can walk there too I do. The shrimp are always freash and from our local fishing grounds off of Mayport so your suporting our local shrimpers too. For a dinner for two with the qupon out of the Money Mint its $30.00 for Seafood Cobo, 1 dozen oysters, one bier and 20 pc shrimp dinner. Ware can you eart like that for $30.00+tip?
